NURU Animated series: Meet the Characters

Nuru, a 3D animated series has been designed and crafted with the audience in mind and at the core of its creation. Over the coming few weeks we will explore the series throughout every season ranging from pre-launch reviews, launch and post launch reviews. Starting off, let me take you in an imaginative journey of who the characters are.

Nuru has a total of ten intergenerational characters. Exposed to different life experiences from the past, some of them adverse, opened up to different contradicting expectations to the future, these characters interact in thrilling, dramatic and intense relationships. Let us dive deep into their intricate details.

NURU

Age: 13 years.

Meet Nuru, a confident, courageous, stubborn, risk-taker, loving, naive young girl who cares for and believes in family and friends over anything. She desires to have a healthy future as a woman. A daughter to a tribal chief and a standard seven student. She lives her life to fight against being mutilated and to raise the bar of awareness against female genital mutilation in her Vilage. Her love for family and friends fuels her fight, as she dreams of a future where every woman is free from harm. Join Nuru’s journey, as she lights the path towards change.

MAMA NURU

Age: 40 years.

Nuru’s mother is a symbol of silent strength, torn between tradition and love. conflicted between maintaining her family’s pride and being a bad mother with no voice to speak, bound by obedience, yet fueled by a mother’s love. Her heart aches with the conflict of upholding her family’s pride and giving her daughter a voice she herself never had. Can she break the chains of convention for the love of her child? Can she overcome her conservativeness, fear for her daughters sake and yet be obedient to her husband.

TEACHER ANJA

Age: 31 years.

Unveiling Teacher Anja: A survivor Female genital mutilation and walking proof of courage and intellect. She is confident, smart, mature, fearless, educated, and determined. Having overcome the challenges of female genital mutilation, she stands tall, using education as her tool to inspire change. Witness her fearless pursuit of a better tomorrow as she live for positive impact

BABA NURU

49 Years.

A tribal leader, father and husband. He is conservative, proud, masculine, bitter, greedy, He holds traditions and customs of his tribe and longs not to allow his daughter to go against their traditions, not in his house. A figure of authority, battling with the winds of change. His realm is a fortress of age-old customs, but the tides are shifting. He fears failing as a leader and being outsmarted by women. Will he uphold the past, or embrace a new dawn? Join his journey, as he wrestles with the challenge of change.

Waku

Age: 14 years.

Meet Waku: Vibrant, charming, a brother to Welu and a close friend to Nuru., Full of life, he Stands out to support his immediate female figures against the fight of female genital mutilation. His vibrant spirit and unwavering loyalty shine as he stands up for the women in his life. Join him as he champions the fight against female genital mutilation.

Welu

14 years.

A calm and intelligent young lady. A sister to waku and right hand to Nuru; Nuru’s confidante She is privileged to navigates the turbulent waters of tradition under her uncle’s protection in the fight against female genital mutilation. Join her as she stands firm in the face of adversity.

Mayasa

Age: 45 years

Informed to the details of the deeper secrets in his community. Works at a school where Nuru and friends go to. He represents the men and women who know their communities to the core and are willing to shed light on issues for a better livelihood for everyone in the community.

Baba Mdogo

Age: 36 years

A listener and loving guardian to Welu and Waku. A husband to a female genital mutilation survivor and male figure standing out against FGM. A compassionate guardian he stands firm to advocate for a safer future.

Mama Mdogo

Age: 33 years

Introducing Mama Mdogo: A symbol of resilience and hope. As Baba Mdogo’s wife and an expectant mother, she embodies the reality of the life-threatening consequences and reminder of the urgent need for change.

Bibi Mkunga

Age: 69 years.

Meet Bibi Mkunga: A potential transformative figure in the village. face and instrument through which girls encounter their worst of fates in their villages, but her influential role can pave the way for new traditions, advocating for alternative rites of passage that respect the dignity and rights of every girl. Join her as she battles to experience this new reality.
